Publishing and Writing

As a writing program, WiER is devoted more to interaction and debate in response to writing than to publishing per se. However, that said, we are pleased to offer links to a few selected resources we think you will find particularly useful for writing and publishing.

Online & Off

We recommend links for specific reasons. Normally, you will find that the selections listed here

  • are quite comprehensive
  • offer many links to other useful sites themselves
  • represent a good opportunity for reading and publishing student works
  • offer a handy reference

In Their Own Words

We will offer some of our own views about the sites that follow, as well as highlight what they have to say about themselves. If there are particular sites you think others would find useful as well, please let us know. We will update this list from time to time.

The Claremont Review

The Claremont Review is among WiER's favourite publications of student works. In fact, a number of WiER students have contributed to CR, and you can too - right from this site! In their own words,

Nobody should be surprised at the wealth of talent among today's high school students. Nobody should be surprised that a journal designed specifically for their writings was dragged squalling from the publisher's primal muck. Nobody should be surprised that, given a goal of excellence to strive for, young writers will produce stories and poems of a calibre that denies the label "student writing."

- C. R. Editors

We agree. CR  has featured the literary and artisitc works of international high school students since 1992. Subscription information, a poetry contest, and other information is available at the site. Claremont Secondary School is located in Saanich, just outside Victoria, B.C. Claremont has about 950 students in Grades 9 - 12.

Canadian Literature Archive, Writer's Organizations and Resources

A A The Canadian Literature Archive is a joint project of St. John's College, the English Department, University of Manitoba, and the Archives at the Dafoe Library at the University of Manitoba. In their own words,

The archive is intended to be a repository for materials for the study of Canadian literature. The archive is at present under construction and in its earliest form. We expect it to grow and change, and we invite participation from scholars around the world.

The link we are highlighting here is to their "Writer's Organizations and Resources" page which, among other things, offers links to

  • organizations and resources of interest to Canadian writers and students
  • subscription information for many Canadian literary publications
  • submission information

Children's Literature - Resources for Teachers

Another librarian, David K. Brown at the University of Calgary, will already be well known to many visitors to this page for his work on The Children's Literature Web Guide which, as he notes,

Is an attempt to gather together and categorize the growing number of Internet resources related to books for Children and Young Adults. Most of the information that you can find through these pages is provided by others: fans, schools, libraries, and commercial enterprises involved in the book world.

This is an excellent collection of resources, and we really like them at WiER!

What If? Canada's Fiction Magazine for Teens

A relatively new magazine, What If? is published 6 times per year and provides Canadian teens with a quality forum for showcasing their work. In their own words:
