About Turning Points

The Turning Points Conference is a one-day event hosted by The Learning Partnership, as the culmination of the Turning Points essay contest which is open to all high school students in the Greater Toronto Area. Seven workshops for students and teachers, led by professional Canadian writers, and one workshop for teachers led by an experienced WiER teacher, were run at the 2002 conference.

Rona Maynard, Editor of Chatelaine, served as the Keynote Speaker while Veronica Lacey, President and CEO of The Learning Partnership, provided closing remarks.

The Turning Points Essay Contest Conference took place on May 29, 2002 at York University, Glendon College in Toronto.

Participants

In attendance at the Turning Points Conference were teachers who participated in the contest as well as award-winning students and the top student from each school.

The participating writers, Lawrence Hill, Sylvia McNicholl, Rhea Tregebov, Nalo Hopkinson, Susan Glickman, Daniel David Moses and Edo van Belkom were presented in partnership with Writers In Electronic Residence.

Each writer gave two interactive workshops on May 29, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The focus of these workshops were on creative writing and on the writer's own creative process along with readings.Marlene Bourdon-King, an experienced WiER Teacher Moderator, gave a workshop for teachers on Writers In Electronic Residence.
