goviernewKATHERINE GOVIER is a resident of Toronto, Ontario; however, this Edmonton, Alberta native has also lived in Calgary, Washington D.C. and London, England.

While living in England, Katherine taught English at Leeds University. She has also been an English instructor at Ryerson University, and visiting lecturer in creative writing at York University in Toronto.

Perhaps it is because of Katherine's travels that a strongly recognizable setting is very important in the books she has written. These include three collections of short stories: Fables of Brunswick Avenue (1985), Before and After (1989) and The Immaculate Conception Photography Gallery (1994), and nine novels, including Random Descent (1979), Going Through the Motions (1982), Between Men (1987) Hearts of Flame (1991) and Angel Walk (1996). She also edited the travel anthology Without a Guide (1994).

In addition to her writing, Katherine is active in Canada's writing community. She has served as Chair of the Writers' Trust of Canada (then The Writers' Development Trust), as well as a writer with WiER, guiding the program to become the Trust's premier education initiative for some ten years.

Katherine served as President of P.E.N. Canada (1997-8), and is a member of the Writers' Union of Canada. The former University of Alberta and York University graduate has also served as the representative to the Board of Governors of the Canadian Conference of the Arts.

Katherine has been honoured for her literary achievements with many awards including: the Authors' Award, the National Magazine Award in 1979, and the City of Toronto Book Award in 1992, being short-listed for Trillium Award in 1995 and 1997, the 1997 Marian Engel Award for woman writer in mid career, and the 1998 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Alberta.
