Kevin Major

kmajorKEVIN MAJOR was born and raised in Stephenville, Newfoundland. He graduated from Memorial University with a BSc. Kevin worked as a teacher for more than a decade before he became a full-time writer in 1988. In addition to his online experience in WiER, Kevin has offered two online residences for student teachers on teaching and writing with young adults.

Kevin is the author of ten novels. The first, Hold Fast, won several awards in Canada and was placed on the Hans Christian Andersen Honour list. The second, Far From Shore, (1980) won the Canadian Young Adult Book Award. Then followedThirty-Six Exposures, Dear Bruce Springsteen, Blood Red Ochre, which was published in 1989 to considerable critical acclaim. Eating Between the Lines, released in 1991 by Doubleday Canada, was chosen as best book of the year by the Canadian Association of Children's Librarians. In 1992 Kevin Major was given the Vicky Metcalf Award, for an outstanding body of work. Diana: My Autobiography was published in the spring of 1993. No Man's Land in 1995, and an adult novel, Gaffer in 1997. His most recent novel, a winner of the Mr. Christie Award, is The House of Wooden Santas. This past year he co-wrote with Craig Kielburger Free the Children, the story of Craig's work to expose the problem of child labour.

Kevin lives in St. John's with his wife, Anne, and their two children. When he's not writing, Kevin is often spending time with his two sons, that means spending lots of time at basketball games. With his wife he shares a love of reading, canoeing, gardens, and art galleries.
