Writers in Electronic Residence (WiER) is seeking volunteer members for its Board of Trustees. Founded in 1988, WiER operates now as a national, charitable, non-profit foundation, which supports its online creative writing programs linking professional Canadian authors with schools.
WiER is at the mid-point of its current strategic plan (2010-13). We anticipate continuing our focus on organizational development (e.g., national Board of Trustees; Board of Advisors) as we approach our next strategic plan.
BACKGROUND
WiER is:
- An educational initiative that focuses on Canada's literary culture through creative literary expression and critical discussion undertaken in a writing—and written—community; and,
- An arts initiative that creates new forms of work for Canada's writers, and audiences for their books.
Our primary activity is deeply rooted in interaction, linking writers with students and teachers in online writing conferences. These programs are undertaken in a computer conferencing environment, and operate on a subscription basis.
Please visit our web site for program information, and details of these roles.
WHAT WE SEEK
The board currently consists of three trustees: the Program Director and Founder and the Chair and the Treasurer. The board is seeking one or two additional board members at this time, and of particular interest are those individuals with professional/academic experience in capital campaigns, marketing, public relations and public affairs.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The minimum time commitment is four (4) days per year to attend board meetings, plus pre-work, and travel time dependent on location. In addition, directors are expected to participate on committees, strategy sessions, and ad hoc working groups that are set up from time to time.
The additional time commitment would vary from year to year, but total involvement would not be expected to exceed 40 hours per year.
REQUIREMENTS
The following supporting documents must be included with the nomination:
- A resume stating skills, experience (including involvement with fundraising, marketing, public relations or public affairs), qualifications or any other relevant factors; and,
- A cover letter which describes the candidate’s interest in the educational and literary communities and why they would want to be a part of the WiER community.
DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS
We hope to hear from you by February 10, 2012. Please forward all materials by email, or apply online here.
